Gadchiroli, Feb. 6 -- A 16-year-old Class 11 student on her way home was killed after being run over by a water tanker allegedly driven by a drunken driver in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, police said.

The deceased, identified as Riya Shravan Pada, was returning home on a bicycle with her friends after school when the tanker, deployed for road-construction work, hit her from behind near Karvafa village on Thursday.

The impact was severe and the vehicle's wheel reportedly ran over her head, resulting in her instantaneous death.

Riya was a student of Rajiv Gandhi High School, Karvafa, and lived about two kilometres from the accident site.

The tanker involved in the incident bears registration number MH 33-4095.
