New Delhi, April 13 -- On the very first day of trading on Monday after the US-Iran talks in Islamabad failed, the Indian stock market closed the day on a low.

At close, Sensex settled 702.68 points or 0.91 per cent lower at 76,847.57, while Nifty declined to 23,842.65, down 207.95 points or 0.86 per cent.

All major indices were trading in the red, and the broader Nifty smallcap100 and Nifty midcap100 indices slipped about 1.5 per cent each.

Nifty Midcap 100 index fell by 0.57 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index dropped by 0.46 per cent. The overall market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped to Rs 449 lakh crore from Rs 451 lakh crore in the previous session.

Indian rupee plunged 65 paise to 93.38 per dollar.
