Bokaro, Feb. 17 -- Six women from Uttar Pradesh were allegedly assaulted by local residents following rumours of child-lifting in Bokaro district of Jharkhand late on Monday.

The incident occurred near the Damodar river bridge close to Bermo railway station under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar police station.

Police sources said locals grew suspicious after noticing the six women gathered near the bridge and allegedly mistook them for child-lifters, leading to a crowd assembling at the spot and physically assaulting them.
