Mysuru, April 19 -- In a tragic incident, six persons, including women and children, drowned in the Cauvery river near the Arakeshwara temple in Krishnarajanagar taluk of Mysuru district on Sunday, police said.

According to initial reports, several families had gathered at a nearby dargah in connection with an urus festival. During the visit, eight members of a single family entered the river for a swim. However, they were caught in a sudden strong current and whirlpool-like flow, leading to six of them being swept away.

Local residents, who noticed the victims struggling in the water, rushed to their aid and managed to rescue two persons. The remaining six drowned before help could reach them.
