Mumbai, March 5 -- Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Thursday nominated Prof Jyoti Waghmare as the party's candidate for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections from Maharashtra, representing the BJP-led Mahayuti ruling alliance. Thursday marked the last day for filing nominations.

Earlier in the day, Shinde had sparked political speculation by indicating that the Shiv Sena might field two candidates - Prof Jyoti Waghmare and Rohit Tilak, the great-grandson of freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak - in an apparent attempt to challenge the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVA) lone candidate, NCP founder Sharad Pawar.
