Lucknow, Feb. 22 -- Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Uttar Pradesh government of deliberately insulting Shankaracharya.

He said the government is deliberately trying to tarnish the reputation of a religious saint by bringing up a 20-year-old incident and registering a case against him.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Yadav said this is the first time a Shankaracharya has been prevented from bathing in the Ganga during the Magh Mela. He said the Shankaracharya sat on a dharna for several days in the bitter cold, which is against the Sanatan tradition.
