Hyderabad, Feb. 7 -- : In a major scientific breakthrough with far-reaching implications for global health and food security, researchers at the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB) here have uncovered how a fungus's internal sugar metabolism controls its ability to cause disease.

Fungal infections, often overlooked compared to viral and bacterial diseases, are emerging as a serious global threat, the Centre said in a release here on Saturday.

They are responsible for rising hospitalisations and deaths worldwide, while also devastating crops and worsening food insecurity.

Alarmingly, the number of effective antifungal drugs is limited, and resistance to existing treatments is increasing rapidly.
