New Delhi, Feb. 5 -- The Supreme Court has upheld the guidelines framed by the Telangana High Court regulating the registration of FIRs in cases arising out of social media posts, and directing the police not to mechanically register cases based on harsh, offensive, or critical political speech.

A Bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice Vijay Bishnoi dismissed a batch of special leave petitions filed by the State of Telangana challenging the High Court judgment, which had quashed three FIRs and laid down detailed operational guidelines for the police and Judicial Magistrates while dealing with criminal proceedings based on social media content.
