New Delhi, Jan. 29 -- In a major development, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered that the University Grants Commission (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026, be kept in abeyance.

The Court expressed serious concerns over the Regulations, observing that several provisions appear vague, unclear, and capable of misuse. It also indicated that the Regulations may have a divisive impact on society and campuses.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing three writ petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the 2026 Regulations.

The petitions have been filed by Mritunjay Tiwari, Advocate Vineet Jindal, and Rahul Dewan.
