Mumbai, Feb. 16 -- A row has erupted in the powerloom town Malegaon in Nashik district over a portrait of Tipu Sultan put up inside the office of the Deputy Mayor Shan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed.

The issue gathered momentum when a picture of the portrait began circulating on social media, leading to protests and strong reactions from several political quarters.

Members of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) and activists from other organisations objected to the installation of the portrait. They argued that displaying the image of a historically debated figure inside a government office was inappropriate and had the potential to disturb social harmony.
