Patna, Jan. 31 -- The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Saturday demanded a special category status for Bihar in the union Budget to be presented in Parliament on February 1.

RJD state spokesperson Chittaranjan Gagan said the Economic Survey clearly showed that Bihar was the poorest state in the country with the lowest per capita income compared to other states.

He pointed out that in districts like Sheohar, Sitamarhi, and Araria, the per capita monthly income is less than Rs 3,000. He also said that Bihar has a debt of more than Rs 3.5 lakh crore, which means each person in the state carries a debt burden of over Rs 25,000. In such a situation, he said, a special category status was necessary to lift Bihar out of poverty.
