Shillong, March 23 -- The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) on Monday directed the state government to pay Rs.10 lakh as compensation to the children of a mother who died at Jowai Maternity and Child Hospital (MCH) in West Jaintia Hills district.
In its order, the MHRC directed the additional chief secretary, health and family welfare department that the compensation amount be handed over to the children of the deceased in order to "improve their living conditions as they have lost their mother".
According to the family members of the deceased from Jalaphet village, East Jaintia Hills district, the death of the woman was due to the 'gross negligence' on part of the Hospital's medical staff.
