Chandigarh, Feb. 2 -- Tensions gripped parts of Jalandhar on Monday as Punjab police intercepted members of the Bharti Kisan union (Sidhupur) attempting to block the Amritsar-Delhi National Highway. The farmers were protesting against the proposed biofuel and bio-gas plant in the Jamsher Khas area.

Following the police intervention, the protesters shifted their demonstration to the road at Sofi Pind, leading to traffic congestion on rural routes as farmer leaders raised slogans against the local administration and state government.
