Chandigarh, Nov. 24 -- Punjab has designated three key Sikh religious centres as holy cities, introducing a ban on the sale of alcohol, meat and tobacco in these areas.

The announcement came after a special session of the Punjab Assembly held at Sri Anandpur Sahib to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that Sri Anandpur Sahib, Talwandi Sabo and the Golden Temple corridor in Amritsar will receive the formal status of sacred cities.

He further said that a special fund will be established to strengthen cleanliness and preservation efforts at these locations.
