Shimla/Shillai, July 25 -- A recent incident in Shillai village of Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, where two brothers solemnised marriage with a single woman, has reignited discussions around the centuries-old custom of polyandry - a practice still observed in remote tribal belts like Shillai and Bharmour.
Though celebrated locally as a cultural tradition of the Hati community, the practice has found renewed attention on social media platforms, triggering a larger conversation around its underlying causes.
Experts and officials believe that polyandry, once rooted in economic necessity and land preservation, is now also being perpetuated by a demographic crisis: the severely skewed sex ratio in these areas.
