Srinagar, Oct. 6 -- As the election process for the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, vacant since February 2021, got underway after the notification issued by the Election Commission today, political fervour is set to grip the union Territory once again.

The 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly currently has an effective strength of 88.

The National Conference (NC) holds 41 seats and enjoys the support of the CPI(M)'s lone MLA as well as five of the seven independents.

The Congress, with six MLAs, brings the total strength of the NC-NC-Congress alliance to 53.
