Kabul, Aug. 14 -- Police have arrested three drug smugglers and seized 297 kg of illegal drugs in northern Afghanistan's Takhar province, provincial police spokesman Nizamudin Omir said Wednesday night.
The suspects were attempting to transport opium poppy concealed in a vehicle when they were identified and intercepted by police, Omir said. Officers discovered the drugs during an inspection and took the smugglers into custody.
Afghan authorities have intensified their crackdown on narcotics and related crimes. Recently, police arrested eight people linked to the purchase and trafficking of illegal drugs in the provinces of Kunduz, Farah, Balkh, Parwan, and Sari Pul.
