Hyderabad, April 7 -- The Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu) attained criticality on April 6 at 8:35 p.m., marking a significant milestone in India's nuclear power programme, according to Hyderabad-based Nuclear Fiel Complex (NFC) here.

The achievement signals the commencement of the second stage of the country's nuclear programme, with the fully indigenised PFBR playing a key role in advancing energy self-reliance, NFC said in a release here on Tuesday.

The Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC) has been closely associated with the PFBR project since its inception and has supplied key structural components for the reactor's fuel and other core sub-assemblies.
