Bhubaneswar, March 9 -- With construction of additional wards to decongest the overcrowded prisons across the State coming to an end, the overcrowding of jails has been resolved, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi told the Assembly on Monday.

The Orissa High Court had earlier directed the State government to expedite measures to decongest the overcrowded prisons and formulate a comprehensive action plan to keep the contagion at bay.

Currently, the State has 86 jails with the capacity to accommodate 24,189 inmates. With 18,176 inmates, the prisons across the State house fewer prisoners than their capacity.
