Berlin, July 31 -- Over 200 German cultural figures in an open letter called on the country's chancellor, Friedrich Merz, to halt arms exports to Israel amid the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, the Spiegel newspaper reported on Thursday.
The signatories stated that the chancellor had criticized the Israeli government in recent days, but "words alone do not save lives" and they have to be supported by action. The letter, which is titled "Don't let Gaza die, Mr. Merz," urges the chancellor to stop arms exports to Israel, suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement and demand an immediate ceasefire and unhindered access to humanitarian aid.
