Bhopal, April 24 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday took suo motu cognizance of the incident where villagers forced a woman to carry her husband on her shoulders and paraded her through the village on allegations that she had eloped with someone else, in the tribal-dominated Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh on April 13.
The accused villagers had also shaved the woman's head, as part of the punishment to her.
The incident had come to light after a video was circulated on social media.
The NHRC has observed that the incident, if true, raises serious issues of human rights violations of the victim.
