Bhubaneswar, March 28 -- The Eastern Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Kolkata, has admitted an application alleging serious environmental violations by Vedanta Limited at its alumina refinery unit in Lanjigarh, Odisha, following a major breach in its red mud pond in September 2024.
The matter was heard on March 23 by a Bench comprising Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh (Judicial Member) and Ishwar Singh (Expert Member). The application was filed by environmental activist Dillip Kumar Samantaray, represented by Advocate Akhand.
According to the petition, a breach occurred on September 15, 2024, in the dyke wall of Vedanta's Process Water Lake (PWL), which is linked to its red mud disposal system. The breach reportedly led to the u...
