Mumbai, Feb. 18 -- The National Green Tribunal has directed a joint inspection into alleged illegal quarrying and stone crushing activities taking place behind the Tata Cancer Hospital at Kharghar, calling for a comprehensive inquiry into the extent of excavation and the possible impact on the leading cancer treatment and research facility.
The Western Zone Bench of the tribunal, while hearing two related matters - a petition moved by NatConnect Foundation director BN Kumar and a suo motu case initiated on the basis of media reports - passed the order on February 12. The Bench constituted a four-member Joint Committee and instructed it to conduct a site visit and submit its findings within one month.
