New Delhi, Jan. 30 -- The National Green Tribunal has taken strong exception to the continuing dumping of solid waste in the fragile Himalayan region of Lahaul and Spiti, warning that garbage is repeatedly being dumped in areas draining directly into the Chandra river, a key glacial-fed river of Himachal Pradesh.
Hearing a petition filed by environmental organisation Friends, the Tribunal noted that inspection reports show widespread dumping of waste along hill slopes and nallahs at Shakas and Billing Nallahs near Keylong, from where plastic and other non-biodegradable waste can easily be washed into the Chandra during snowmelt and rainfall.
