NCST moots alternative to jhum cultivation, calls for Hindi promotion in Mizoram
Aizawl, April 30 -- Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Antar Singh Arya has called for the gradual phasing out of jhum or shifting cultivation in Mizoram, advocating for the formulation of a pilot project to introduce more sustainable farming practices with reduced environmental impact.
Arya made the remark during a review meeting convened in Aizawl on Wednesday with senior state officials to assess the implementation of welfare and development schemes for Scheduled Tribes in the state. The NCST delegation, currently on a four-day visit to Mizoram, includes members Nirupam Chakma, Dr Asha Lakra, and Jatothu Hussain.
