Aizawl, Dec. 11 -- Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Mizoram's lone MP K. Vanlalvena criticised alleged attempts by Income Tax authorities to seek tax compliance from tribal professionals from the state, saying such actions run contrary to constitutional protections.

Vanlalvena reminded the House that under Section 10(26) of the Income Tax Act, members of Scheduled Tribes residing in tribal areas are exempt from paying income tax. He said it was therefore clear that Mizo tribals are not liable to pay income tax under the Constitution.
