Aizawl, Feb. 13 -- Mizoram on Friday marked a quiet but significant industrial first with the commissioning of the Northeast's maiden fish canning unit at Zawlnuam in Mamit district, western Mizoram.

Set up by the Zawlnuam Fishery Cooperation Society, the facility is being seen as a step towards value addition in the state's fishery sector and a move to reduce dependence on raw fish sales alone.

The unit was formally opened by PC Vanlalruata, who described the establishment of a fish canning facility in Mizoram as a milestone for the cooperative movement in the state.
