Shillong, Feb. 2 -- The Meghalaya government is alert and prepared to deal with the Nipah virus (NiV) , though no cases have been reported in the state so far, Health and Family Welfare Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said on Monday.

"As of now, we don't have any concrete evidence or report of Nipah virus in Meghalaya. I also don't want to create panic among the public. But we are fully aware and fully prepared," Shylla said, reacting to reports of Nipah virus cases in West Bengal.

NiV infection is a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans through infected animals (such as bats), or food contaminated with saliva, urine, and excreta of infected animals.
