Shillong, May 12 -- Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that Meghalaya is the second largest eri cocoon producer globally, generating approximately 700 MT of eri cocoon annually.

However, Sangma said that despite strong production, farmers were often forced to sell cocoons at low prices, and weavers were forced to buy back the same yarn at a high cost due to absence of local spinning facilities.

"The cocoon to yarn gap has been the single biggest constraint in our eri silk value chain," the Chief Minister said, while inaugurating Sai Lum, an eri yarn manufacturing unit, at Bhoirymbong in Ri-Bhoi district on Monday.

He expressed confidence that entrepreneurship enterprises like Sai Lum will bridge cocoon production and yarn production.
