Shillong, Feb. 4 -- A single-member panel appointed by the Meghalaya High Court to handle coal-related issues has ordered the government for immediate release of funds for the demolition of 33 illegal coke oven plants in East Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills districts.

In his 34th interim report submitted to the Meghalaya High Court, Justice (retired) Brojendra Prasad Katakey, who heads the panel, directed the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) for immediate release of funds to the respective district administration to demolish the 16 and 17 coke plants in East Jaintia Hills district and West Khasi Hills district, citing the possibility of stealthy production.
