Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 28 -- union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Minority Affairs George Kurian today launched the 'Matsya Shakthi' project in Thiruvananthapuram district, aimed at empowering minority fisher families through skill development and vocational training.

The one-year initiative, being implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Virasat Ka Samvardhan (PM VIKAS) scheme, will benefit about 700 minority fisher families in the district, which has one of the largest populations of fisherfolk from minority communities. The programme is executed by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) at its Vizhinjam Regional Centre.
