New Delhi, March 19 -- Domestic equity markets came under heavy selling pressure in early trade on Thursday, dragging benchmark indices sharply lower amid broad-based weakness.

The BSE Sensex plunged 1,638.86 points or 2.14 per cent to trade at 75,065.27 around 10:30 am, after opening significantly lower at 74,750.92.

The index slipped to an intraday low of 74,685.52, reflecting sustained selling across key stocks.

The Nifty 50 also witnessed a steep decline, falling 498.85 points or 2.10 per cent to 23,278.95.

The index opened at 23,197.75 and hovered close to its day's low of 23,180.95 in early deals, indicating weak investor sentiment.
