Imphal , Feb. 2 -- The State Level Observation of World Wetlands Day 2026 was held on Monday at Yaral Pat, Imphal East, under the theme "Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage."Senior officials announced that 132 wetlands across Manipur have been ground-truthed, boundaries of 71 wetlands delineated, and documentation prepared for 23 wetlands as part of ongoing conservation initiatives.
India, a signatory to the Ramsar Convention since 1982, has designated 96 Ramsar sites, including Loktak Lake in Manipur. Draft notifications have also been issued for Yeralpat, Uttrapat and Waithou Phumnom Pat wetlands, officials informed during the function.
