New Delhi, July 18 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report concerning the alleged suicide of a man following purported custodial torture at the Dwarka North Police Station in the national capital.

The incident reportedly took place on July 11, a day after the victim was taken into custody for questioning in connection with a theft complaint.

In a press release issued today, the Commission noted that the reported facts, if true, indicate a grave violation of the human rights of the deceased. The NHRC has issued a notice to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi, directing him to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
