Lakhimpur Kheri, Jan. 14 -- A 40-year-old man from the Bhira police station area of Lakhimpur Kheri district died after allegedly consuming poison, even as police were taking him for medical treatment, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident has triggered serious allegations by the deceased's family against the police and two private individuals, while police have denied all charges.
The deceased has been identified as Sujeet Mishra, a resident of Medhaipurwa village under Bhira police station limits.
On Tuesday, Sujeet called the police and threatened to commit suicide. During the call, he alleged that a local youth and his female friend were harassing him, threatening him, and demanding Rs 5 lakh as extortion money.
