Shimla, Feb. 3 -- A major accident was narrowly averted at Chalunthi as a significant portion of the Sanjauli-Dhalli bypass road collapsed, creating a 15-foot deep crater during the ongoing four-lane tunnel construction.

The incident didn't cause traffic disruptions but raised urgent safety concerns, leading the administration to suspend all construction work on the project indefinitely.

The collapse occurred above Tunnel-5 on the Dhalli-Chalunthi-IGMC Road. According to an official statement release by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the cave-in was preceded by the appearance of cracks in a nearby building on January 9, 2026.
