Washim, Feb. 22 -- In a tragic turn of events, a 40-year-old farmer, overwhelmed by the financial burden of his daughter's upcoming wedding, died by suicide in Pangari Navghare village of Maharashtra's Washim district, police said on Sunday.

According to police Raju Haribhau Kalapad, who supported his family through a modest one-and-a-half-acre land and manual labor, was reportedly found hanging from a tree in his field on Saturday morning.

Sources said with his daughter Poonam's wedding scheduled for March 14, Raju spent the last week desperately seeking financial assistance.

He approached several neighbors and acquaintances for loans to cover the mounting wedding costs, but his efforts were met with refusal at every turn.
