Nagpur, Jan. 30 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the Akola Municipal Corporation elections on Friday, with Sharda Khedkar and Amol Goge elected as mayor and deputy mayor, respectively.

Akola Municipal Commissioner Sunil Lahane told reporters that corporators belonging to the Akola Shehar Sudhar Aghadi, an alliance comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and both factions of the NCP, backed Khedkar for the mayoral post and Goge for deputy mayor.

Khedkar secured 45 votes, defeating her nearest rival, Surekha Kale of the Shiv Sena (UBT), who polled 32 votes.

Lahane said Khedkar received support from 38 BJP corporators, three from NCP (SP), one each from the NCP and Shiv Sena, along with two independent corporators.
