Bhandara, April 15 -- A five-year-old girl was killed after being attacked by a leopard in Sakoli taluka of Maharashtra's Bhandara district, officials said.

The incident occurred on Wednesday in the Umarzari area near Virshi village in the early hours, triggering panic among residents.

The victim, identified as Anshika Miri, was dragged away by the leopard from near her temporary shelter and killed, sources said.

According to preliminary information, the girl's family, natives of Chhattisgarh, had come to the area for brick kiln work and were staying in a makeshift hut in a field.

Forest officials said the region has been witnessing frequent wildlife movement over the past month, with a tigress earlier reported in the vicinity.
