Sagar Island (WB), Jan. 15 -- Around 1.3 crore pilgrims visited this island on the southern tip of West Bengal to take a ritual dip at the Sagar Sangam - the confluence of the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal - during the ongoing Gangasagar fair till Thursday on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

About 150 km from Kolkata in the South 24 Parganas district, Sagar Island is considered auspicious by the Hindus, who gather here at this time of the year, braving the icy cold conditions and chilly winds.

This year, the auspicious period for the holy bath (Shahi snan) began on Wednesday afternoon and stretched to Thursday, as the pilgrims took the dip and then headed to the iconic Kapil Muni temple, coconut in hand, to offer prayers.
