Kolkata, Nov. 24 -- Six members of a silversmith's family, including four minors, were taken critically ill in West Medinipur district after consuming a day meal that was accidentally cooked with acid instead of water, a district health official said.

All six were initially admitted to the Ghatal Super Speciality Hospital but were later shifted to the SSKM Hospital in Kolkata as their condition deteriorated.

The incident occurred at Ratneswarbati village under the Ghatal block on Sunday noon when a relative, who had come to visit the family of silversmith Santhu Sanyasi, prepared the meal. Unaware that a container held acid used for melting silver, she reportedly used it in place of water while cooking rice.
