Kochi, Feb. 12 -- The Kerala High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil, who was expelled from the Congress, in the first of three alleged sexual assault cases registered against him, providing him protection from arrest while the case proceeds.

The case, filed by the Nemom police, involves allegations that Mamkootathil raped a woman, impregnated her, and then compelled her to undergo an abortion, according to the charges.

Mamkootathil, who has been facing intense public and legal scrutiny, has maintained that the relationship with the complainant was consensual and has denied the allegations, claiming they are politically motivated.
