Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 26 -- Kerala is set for one of its largest grassroots democratic exercises as the state heads to the 2025 local body elections, to be held in two phases on December 9 and 11.

Spread across 23,576 wards and involving nearly 2.84 crore voters, the elections will decide representatives in 1,199 local bodies, including gram panchayats, block panchayats, district panchayats, municipalities, and corporations.

Following scrutiny and withdrawals, a total of 72,005 candidates are officially contesting. Of them, 37,786 are women, 34,218 are men, and one candidate is transgender, highlighting a broad participation spectrum and reaffirming Kerala's strong record in inclusive representation.
