Bengaluru, March 21 -- The tragic death of veterinarian Dr Sameeksha Reddy at the Tyavarekoppa Zoo in Shivamogga has intensified scrutiny on safety protocols and accountability in wildlife facilities, even as the state government has announced immediate compensation for her family.

Dr Reddy, 27, a newly recruited veterinary officer undergoing training, was attacked late Thursday night while performing routine duties, authorities said.

After treating a bird around 10:30 pm, she entered the enclosure of a pregnant hippopotamus to monitor her body temperature with a thermal camera. The animal reportedly became aggressive and mauled her, causing critical internal injuries.
