Tokyo, July 21 -- In a significant blow to Japan's political establishment, the ruling coalition has lost its majority in the House of Councillors, deepening public discontent and raising questions about Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's leadership.

This follows their earlier setback in the 2024 House of Representatives election, marking the first time since the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) founding in 1955 that the ruling bloc finds itself a minority in both chambers of parliament, reports RT News.

The final vote count, completed early today, revealed the LDP secured just 39 of the 125 contested seats, with coalition partner Komeito taking a mere eight.
