Cannes, May 24 -- Iranian director Jafar Panahi today won the Palme d'Or for 'It Was Just An Accident', a haunting reflection of a young generation's seething anger against a repressive regime, at the 78th Cannes film festival.

Celebrated French actor Julitte Binoche, the president of the competition jury, which included Mumbai-born filmmaker Payal Kapadia, announced the winner of the festival's top honour at a glittering closing ceremony tonight.

There was no Indian film in the prestigious competition section of the Cannes festival this year. Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light' won the Grand Prix, the festival's second-biggest award last year.
