Tehran, May 1 -- Iran's population of 90 million has been facing massive internet restrictions since the beginning of 2026 including an ongoing two-month blackout, marking one of the world's longest and strictest net curbs. The shutdown has devastated the nation's online economy which had long defied government restrictions and international sanctions.

The internet shutdown has affected the incomes of all small and medium business across multiple sectors, ranging from fashion to fitness, to advertising and retailers, all of whom have seen their incomes evaporate.

Despite its volatile and fragile truce with the US and Israel, Iran's rulers have refused to reverse the shutdown that they have depicted as a wartime necessity.
