Chennai, Oct. 18 -- The sports stadium at the Madras Regimental Centre of the Indian Army at Wellington in The Nilgiri's Districtin Tamil Nadu has been named after the legendary Indian football player Peter Thangaraj.
A true giant of the game, Havildar Peter Thangaraj of Madras Regimental Centre (MRC) represented India at the Asian Games and the 1956 and1960 Olympics at Melbourne and Rome respectively.
He was voted 'The Best Goalkeeper of Asia' in 1956 and honoured with Arjuna Award in 1967.
He was a member of the MRC football team the Indian Army's only regimental team till date to win Durand Cup twice in 1955 and 1958, a record which remains unbroken.
