Hyderabad, April 7 -- Telangana Jagruti President K. Kavitha on Tuesday accused the BJP-led Central Government of weakening the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), alleging that recent changes are aimed at diluting its legal protections.

Addressing the issue, Kavitha said the reclassification of the scheme from an "Act" to a "programme" would strip it of statutory backing and weaken its enforceability.

She alleged that such a move could make it easier for the government to discontinue the scheme in the future without legal challenge.
