Hyderabad, Feb. 26 -- Doctors at Ankura Hospitals here reported that they have successfully performed a specialised gastrostomy feeding procedure on an eight-month-old infant born with severe neurological conditions, enabling safe long-term nutrition and reducing the risk of aspiration.

The baby was diagnosed at birth with meningomyelocele, a severe form of spina bifida, and congenital hydrocephalus, and had earlier undergone surgery, including placement of a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to drain excess fluid from the brain, the hospitals said in a release here on Thursday.

Due to progressive swallowing difficulties, oral feeding became unsafe and the infant was dependent on a nasogastric tube.
